The Vibe-Coding Race on Upwork: Cursor vs Lovable vs Replit vs Bolt (2026)

Clients used to post "I need a website." Now they post "I need someone who can ship with Lovable" or "must know Cursor." In 16 months, a new vocabulary took over how people buy software on Upwork, and four tools own most of it.

We pulled every public Upwork job posting from January 2025 to April 2026 and counted how often each AI build tool showed up by name. This is the race as the market actually wrote it.

Line chart of monthly Upwork job mentions for Cursor, Lovable, Replit and Bolt from January 2025 to April 2026, with Lovable and Cursor pulling ahead

The headline number

Four tools now account for the bulk of "build it for me" demand on Upwork: Cursor, Lovable, Replit, and Bolt. Two of them are running away with it. Over the 16 months, Lovable was named in 6,243 job posts and Cursor in 5,373, far ahead of the rest of the field.

The growth gap is even starker than the totals. Measured from January 2025 to April 2026, Lovable mentions grew +627% and Cursor +215%. Replit grew a respectable +52%. Bolt actually slipped -6%.

Tool by tool

Lovable is the breakout. It started the period as a small mention count and finished as the single most-named build tool on Upwork, around 530 posts a month by April 2026. Clients reach for it when they want a working app or site fast, and they say so in the job title.

Cursor is the steady heavyweight. It grew more than 3x and sits just behind Lovable at roughly 450 mentions a month. Cursor shows up most in posts that expect a developer in the loop, not just a generated result.

Replit had the most interesting shape. It climbed through mid-2025, peaked, then settled lower as Lovable and Cursor absorbed attention. It is still growing year over year, just no longer leading.

Bolt is the one that went sideways. It holds a real, if smaller, niche, but it is the only one of the four that ended the period below where it started.

In raw demand added per month, the same story holds: Lovable added the most new monthly mentions (+370), then Cursor (+295), then Replit (+59), while Bolt slipped slightly (-7).

What this means if you freelance or run an agency

The tools clients name in a job post are the keywords your profile gets matched against. If you can ship with Lovable or Cursor, say so plainly in your title and your first proposal line. Demand is concentrating, and the early movers on these keywords are the ones getting invited.

For agencies, this is a positioning signal. The "I want a website" budget is rotating toward AI-native build tools, and the win rate is moving with it. Pricing a Lovable or Cursor build as a productized offer is a cleaner pitch in 2026 than a generic "custom development" listing.

How we know

These numbers are not a survey or a guess. They come from the raw Upwork jobs dataset, 3.8 million+ public job postings cleaned and structured so you can count exactly this kind of trend yourself: mentions by tool, by month, by category, by budget.

If you want to run your own cut of the vibe-coding race, or any other slice of the freelance market, the full dataset is a one-time download with the latest jobs included.
