Upwork English Level: What Clients Actually Require (2026 Data)

Short answer: most Upwork jobs don't set an English level at all. In 322,721 public job posts from July to September 2026, 89.5% accepted any level. Only 6.2% asked for fluent English, 2.4% for conversational and 1.9% for native.

If you have been worried that your English level is quietly blocking you from jobs, the data says it is a small filter, not a wall. Here is where it matters, whether those jobs pay more, and what to put on your profile.

How often Upwork jobs set an English level

When a client posts a job, they can set an English level as one of the job's requirements. In our data the options are any level, conversational, fluent or native. Across all 322,721 public jobs:

  • No level set: 288,826 jobs (89.5%)
  • Fluent: 19,872 jobs (6.2%)
  • Conversational: 7,863 jobs (2.4%)
  • Native: 6,160 jobs (1.9%)

So about 1 in 10 jobs sets any English level. When a client does set one, fluent is the usual pick: 58.6% of those jobs ask for fluent.

US clients set a level a bit more often than everyone else: 12.0% of their jobs, against 9.2% for clients outside the US. Native English shows up on 2.4% of US client jobs and 1.5% of the rest.

Which categories ask for English the most

Bar chart of the share of Upwork jobs that set an English level by category, Jul-Sep 2026. Customer Service 17.5% highest, Translation 6.8% lowest

  • Customer Service: 17.5%, the highest.
  • Admin Support: 14.1%.
  • Writing: 13.5%. Writing also has the highest share of native-English requirements, 5.4% of its jobs.
  • Accounting & Consulting and Sales & Marketing: 13.2% each.
  • Web, Mobile & Software Dev and Design & Creative: 8.4% each.
  • Translation: 6.8%, the lowest of all.

Jobs built around talking to customers or writing in English ask for a level more often. Jobs where the output is code or a design ask less. Two rows break the pattern: Legal (7.6%) and Translation (6.8%) are the two lowest, even though both are language-heavy work.

Do jobs that ask for English pay more?

It depends on the job type.

Hourly jobs: no. The median top hourly rate was $30/hour on jobs with no level set (113,536 jobs), $25 on conversational (3,974), $25 on fluent (11,500) and $30 on native (3,422). Asking for English did not come with a higher hourly rate.

Fixed-price jobs: bigger budgets, by a lot. The median budget was $100 on jobs with no level set (127,673 jobs), $250 on conversational (2,816), $300 on fluent (5,603) and $400 on native (1,773). We also checked inside US clients only, so the gap is not just "US clients pay more". There it was $100 with no level, against $300 for conversational, $300 for fluent and $500 for native.

These are advertised budgets, not final contract values. Part of the gap may also be category mix, since the categories that ask for English are not a random slice of the market. Still, a fixed-price job that names an English level had a bigger advertised budget in our data, not a smaller one.

Is the English level enforced?

We could not find an Upwork help page that says whether a lower English level stops you from applying. What we can see in the job data: a location lock comes with a separate flag that tells you Upwork enforces it, and the English level has no such flag. So we read it as the client's preference, not a block we can confirm. Our US-only jobs analysis explains how that lock works.

Either way, a client who sets "native" is telling you what they want. If your English is not at that level, a native-level writing job is probably not where your Connects work hardest.

Which English level should you choose on your profile?

Upwork's advice is short: "You should self-assess your skill level; however, it's important to be honest when assessing your language abilities." It also warns that "Overstating any skills may make it difficult to satisfy your clients and could adversely impact your reputation on Upwork." (Upwork Help)

So pick the level you can back up on a client call. If you want proof, Upwork lets you "Take an Upwork-approved test from a third-party provider, which includes Duolingo tests, and add your certificate from the test." A certificate does more than a claim.

Then remember the bigger number. 89.5% of jobs don't set any level, so your profile title, overview and proposals do far more work than the language line. Our Upwork profile guide covers what to fix first, and the free profile analyzer scores your profile for you.

What this means for non-native speakers

  1. Most of the market is open to you. 9 in 10 jobs set no English level. In Web, Mobile & Software Dev and Design & Creative it is more than 9 in 10.
  2. Read the requirement, then decide. A job that asks for native English in Writing or Customer Service is asking for something specfic. Respect it and save your Connects.
  3. Let your proposal show your English. Short, clear sentences beat fancy ones. Our playbook for non-native English speakers has the proposal patterns, and our screening questions data shows what clients ask in writing before they hire.

Method

We scanned every job post in our Upwork dataset first seen between 01/07/2026 and 30/09/2026: 372,754 posts, of which 322,721 had a public job payload with requirements (posts without one are left out). The English level is Upwork's own job field for the client's English requirement, read at the time we saw the post. "No level" means the client left it at any level. Categories are Upwork's top-level category groups with at least 1,000 jobs. Pay figures are medians of the advertised top hourly rate and the fixed budget; the US split uses the client's country. Numbers are counts of real posts, not survey answers.
