Upwork Screening Questions: What Clients Actually Ask (2026 Data From 73,125 Jobs)

Most advice on Upwork screening questions is a list of example questions someone made up. We wanted the real list. So we pulled every screening question attached to the Upwork jobs UpHunt picked up from July to September 2026: 200,807 questions across 73,125 job postings.

The main finding is good news. Screening questions are far more predictable than they feel. A handful of questions make up a big share of everything clients ask, which means you can write strong answers once and reuse them.

The method

UpHunt scrapes every public Upwork job within about a minute of posting, including the screening questions the client attached. We scanned 372,754 postings from July 1 to September 30, 2026. 371,765 of them carried the client data that includes questions, and that is the base for the shares below.

To group questions by topic, we used simple keyword rules (for example, a question mentioning "portfolio", "examples" or "link" counts as a portfolio question). One question can touch more than one topic, so the topic shares do not add up to 100%. Treat them as a good aproximation, not an exact count.

1 in 5 Upwork jobs asks screening questions

73,125 of 371,765 postings (19.7%) had at least one screening question. That matches the 19.7% in our client trust signals snapshot, which covered July to late August.

When a client does ask, they ask 2.75 questions on average:

  • 1 question: 26.6% of jobs with questions
  • 2 questions: 21.7%
  • 3 questions: 20.8%
  • 4 questions: 12.1%
  • 5 questions: 18.7%

Only 43 postings in the whole window had more than five. In practice, five is the ceiling.

The most common Upwork screening questions

These are the exact questions that came up most, as a share of all jobs that had questions:

  1. "Describe your recent experience with similar projects" - 41.6% (asked 30,435 times)
  2. "Please list any certifications related to this project" - 11.6%
  3. "Describe your typical design process and methods" - 5.2%
  4. "Include a link to your GitHub profile and/or website" - 3.4%
  5. "How do you use metrics to inform your strategy?" - 3.3%
  6. "What frameworks have you worked with?" - 2.6%
  7. "Where do you get inspiration from?" - 2.2%
  8. "Describe your approach to testing and improving QA" - 2.2%
  9. "How do you approach difficult conversations with customers?" - 1.9%
  10. "How do you decide what tone of voice to write in?" - 1.5%

The same wording repeating 30,435 times tells you something: many clients are not writing their own questions. They pick from a standard set. The experience question alone shows up on more than 4 in 10 jobs that ask anything.

That is the opportunity. If you have a sharp, specific answer to "describe your recent experience with similar projects" ready for each type of work you do, you have already covered the single most common question on the platform.

What the questions are really about

Bar chart of what Upwork screening questions ask about, Jul-Sep 2026: past experience 62.1%, how you work 33.5%, portfolio or links 25.9%, tools and stack 13.1%, rate or price 10.9%, availability 10.8%

Grouped by topic, using the keyword rules above:

  • Past experience: 62.1% of jobs with questions ask about it in some form.
  • How you work (your process or approach): 33.5%.
  • Portfolio or links: 25.9%.
  • Tools and stack: 13.1%.
  • Rate or price: 10.9%.
  • Availability: 10.8%.
  • Timeline: 7.0%.
  • English level: 4.8%.
  • Video or Loom: 2.1%.

Only 2.1% of jobs with questions ask for a video or voice note. If you want to know when a video intro is worth the effort, see our post on Loom video proposals.

It changes by category

Some categories lean on screening questions more than others. Translation asks the most, with 27% of postings carrying questions, followed by Customer Service (23%), Writing (22%), Accounting & Consulting (22%) and Sales & Marketing (22%). Design & Creative and Web, Mobile & Software Dev ask the least, at about 17% each.

The topics shift too:

  • Web, Mobile & Software Dev: 43.2% of jobs with questions ask for a portfolio or link.
  • Translation: 51.2% ask about English or language level.
  • Customer Service: 49.4% ask about availability, which makes sense for shift work.
  • Data Science & Analytics: 27.0% ask which tools you use.

How to answer Upwork screening questions well

  1. Build an answer bank. Write one strong answer to the experience question for each service you offer, with a real project, a number and a result. Keep a certifications line and a links line ready too. Those three cover several of the most common questions.
  2. Answer the question, then stop. A screening answer is not a second cover letter. Two to four sentences with one concrete detail beats a paragraph of claims. Our post on the psychology of winning proposals explains why specifics win.
  3. Never leave a lazy answer. "N/A" or "see my proposal" tells the client you did not read the job.
  4. Watch for hidden instructions. A small number of clients (235 jobs, 0.3% of jobs with questions) use a question as a test, for example "start your proposal with the word X". Some clients put the same kind of test in the job description instead, so read the whole post.
  5. Keep your profile in sync. Answers about experience and tools should match what the client sees on your profile. Our profile optimization guide helps with that side.

Where UpHunt fits

When UpHunt drafts a proposal for you, it also answers the client's screening questions from the facts you give it: your rates, turnaround, past projects and links. The more of those you put in, the better the answers get, wich is the same answer-bank idea from above, done once instead of every time. Each job in your feed also comes with an AI score and a plain reason why it fits.
