Client Suspended on Upwork: What It Means for Your Contract and Pay (2026)
Short answer: "client suspended" means Upwork has restricted the client's account. You can't apply to their job, an offer from them may not go through, and any contract with them gets paused. Stop work right away: work done during a pause is not covered by Upwork's payment protection. Hours you billed before the pause can still be covered, if they meet Upwork's protection rules. Upwork won't tell you why the client was suspended, and it won't email you about the pause.
If you just saw the line "This feature is not available because the client is suspended" on a job post, this guide explains what happened and what to do with any work and money you have in play.
What "client suspended" means on Upwork
Upwork suspends accounts that break its rules, and it keeps the reason private. Its help center FAQ on suspended users says:
"We may suspend accounts that violate our Terms of Service. ... Unfortunately, we cannot share the specifics about another user's account for privacy and security reasons." (Upwork Help)
Unpaid bills can also lead there. When a client doesn't pay for hourly work in the weekly billing cycle, Upwork lists what happens next, including: "The client's account may be suspended" (Upwork Help).
So a suspended client is not always a scammer. It can be a failed payment. But you won't know which, and you shouldn't guess.
What you see as a freelancer
How it shows up depends on where you meet the client:
- On a job post: you see the line "This feature is not available because the client is suspended." and you can't send a proposal to that job.
- On an offer: "Accept offer" may not work. Upwork's help page on grayed-out buttons says: "Sometimes the issue is on the client's side (like a suspended account). You won't see those details, but you can ask the client to check and confirm their account is active" (Upwork Help).
- On an active contract: the contract is paused or put on hold. Upwork's contract status page, which is written for clients, says contracts go on hold when "your billing method expires, your account is suspended, or there is something wrong with the freelancer's account" (Upwork Help). Here "your" means the client.
One detail catches people out. Upwork says: "Email notifications are not sent for contracts paused or reactivated by us, but you can check a contract's status at anytime in your Upwork account under All contracts" (Upwork Help). If a client goes quiet, check the contract status before you keep working.
What happens to your money
Hourly contracts
This is the clearest case. From Upwork's paused-contract page:
"Any work completed during a contract pause is not covered by our payment protection. For hourly contracts, hours that you billed prior to the contract being paused are still eligible for payment protection."
"Eligible" is the key word. Hourly Payment Protection has its own rules, including: you logged the hours with the time tracker in the Upwork Desktop App, the client was "using a verified billing method", and your account is "in good standing" (Upwork Help). Manual time is not covered.
If the client simply doesn't pay, Upwork tries to charge them "once a day, for five days". Then, for hours covered by protection, Upwork says "We'll pay you directly". For hours that aren't covered, "Funds can't be released until the client pays" (Upwork Help).
Fixed-price contracts
Fixed-price work is protected through funded milestones, money the client deposits before work begins. Upwork is blunt about the unfunded case: "If a milestone isn't funded in advance, we can't help recover payment later." (Upwork Help)
For funded milestones, you can open a dispute when a client "ends the contract with funds still in escrow", among other cases. We could not find a help page that says exactly what happens to a funded milestone when the client is suspended, so if you have one, contact Upwork Support and ask about that specific contract.
What to do, step by step
- Stop working now. Upwork's advice is "Stop working on the contract immediately", and "don't resume working on the contract until you receive a notification from us that the contract is reactivated."
- Message the client on Upwork. "You can still message your client on Upwork when contracts are paused." Ask if they know about the issue and when they expect it fixed.
- Never move payment off Upwork. If the client asks you to keep working and pay you outside Upwork, Upwork says that in most cases you "should decline and report it". Getting paid outside Upwork is called circumvention, and Upwork says it is "a violation of our Terms of Service".
- Check All contracts, not your inbox. There is no email when Upwork pauses or restarts a contract.
- Contact Upwork Support if you have billed hours, a funded milestone or a submitted milestone waiting. Ask about your money on that contract, not about the client's account. Upwork won't share the client's details.
Client suspended vs your account suspended
If the message says your account is suspended, that is a seperate problem with a different fix: an appeal. Our Upwork account suspended guide walks through it step by step.
How to lower the risk next time
You can't see a suspension coming, but you can limit how much a paused contract costs you:
- Prefer clients with a verified payment method. Upwork does not provide Hourly Payment Protection without one. Our payment method not verified data shows 1 in 5 jobs comes from an unverified client.
- Read the client stats before you apply. Hire rate and rating tell you a lot about how a client behaves. Our client hire rate and rating data shows what normal looks like.
- Only work on funded milestones for fixed-price jobs, and log hourly work with the desktop time tracker.
- Skim the red flags in our Upwork red flags guide, like pressure to pay you off-platform.
