The State of AI on Upwork 2026: What 3.5 Million Job Posts Show

AI did not empty Upwork. It moved the work.

That is the one-line summary of UpHunt's independent index of the Upwork market, built from more than 3.5 million public job posts captured in real time between January 2025 and August 2026. Total postings are shrinking fast, AI postings are growing through the shrink, and the gap between those two lines is the whole story of freelancing right now.

Here is the headline comparison, first half of 2025 versus first half of 2026:

  • Total job postings: 1,185,547 down to 959,063, a fall of 19.1%
  • Postings that mention AI: 128,969 up to 156,280, a rise of 21.2%
  • Everything else: down 24.0%

Read those together and the "Upwork is dying" narrative falls apart. The marketplace is not dying, it is being resorted. It is tempting to read these as two seperate marketplaces, but they are the same clients rewriting the same briefs with AI in them.

Line chart showing the share of new Upwork job posts that mention AI climbing steadily from 9.03% in January 2025 to 20.11% in August 2026, rendered in UpHunt's lime-on-white style

AI's Share of Upwork Job Posts Doubled: 9% to 20%

In January 2025, 9.03% of new Upwork job posts mentioned AI. By August 2026 it was 20.11%. One post in five now asks for AI in some form, and the climb has been steady across all twenty months, with only three shallow month-over-month dips along the way. There is no plateau in this chart.

The monthly volume numbers behind it are stark. Upwork posted 207,238 new jobs in January 2025 and 125,118 in August 2026. Over that same window, monthly non-AI postings fell 47% while monthly AI postings grew 34%. The feed is smaller, and a much bigger slice of what remains is AI work.

The Upwork Keyword Flip: Claude Up 372%, GPT Down 65%

Inside the AI slice, the tools clients ask for rotated hard between H1 2025 and H1 2026:

KeywordH1 2025 vs H1 2026
Claude Code+8,162%
Claude+372%
Vibe coding+298%
MCP+219%
Agentic+175%
AI video+151%
AI automation+106%
ChatGPT-13%
Fine-tuning-58%
"GPT"-65%

Claude mentions grew 372% while raw "GPT" mentions collapsed 65% and ChatGPT slipped 13%. We covered that crossover in detail in Claude passes ChatGPT on Upwork. The agentic stack (MCP, agentic workflows, AI automation) is now a real demand category, not a curiosity.

Two more signals worth flagging. Fine-tuning demand fell 58.5%, a sign that clients stopped paying for model surgery once off-the-shelf models got good enough. And "no AI" mentions rose 26.5%: a small but growing set of clients now writes AI refusal into the brief, which is itself a market you can position for.

On the losing side of the ledger sits the legacy stack. WordPress mentions dropped 24.5% in a single year. The full casualty list is in the Upwork skill graveyard.

Which Upwork Categories AI Hit Hardest

We grouped Upwork's categories into six clusters and compared H1 2025 with H1 2026. The damage is not evenly spread:

  • Text and code production (writing, web dev, mobile, data work): down 34.6%, by far the hardest hit. AI share inside the group went from 13.5% to 18.7%, and explicit "no AI" demands per 10k posts jumped from 74.6 to 106.7.
  • Visual and media production: down 13.4%
  • Operations and people: down 15.9%
  • Regulated and advisory: down 13.9%
  • Physical and engineering (CAD, civil, electrical): down just 8.1%. Work that touches the physical world is largely insulated.
  • Marketing and growth: down only 7.4%, the least hit of all six clusters. Distribution is the thing AI has not commoditized.

The pattern is clean: the more a category produces text or code as its deliverable, the harder it fell. We ran the writing collapse in depth in Did AI kill Upwork writing jobs? and tracked the tool-level rotation in Where the Upwork work went.

Upwork Rates in 2026: AI Jobs Pay More, and the Floor Just Cracked

Budgets tell a quieter version of the same story. The median fixed-price budget across all of Upwork has been pinned at $100 for the entire twenty months. The median fixed-price budget on AI jobs has sat at $158 for most of that period, a premium of more than 50%.

Hourly is where the crack showed. The marketplace-wide median hourly budget held at $30 for nineteen straight months, then printed $27 in August 2026, its first slip in our dataset. The AI-job hourly median stayed at $30. One month is not a trend, but the direction of the wedge is consistent: AI work holds its price while general work starts to lose its floor.

Upwork's Own Q2 2026 Numbers Tell the Same Story

You do not have to take our scraper's word for it. Upwork's Q2 2026 investor release (investors.upwork.com) reads like a corroboration of this index: gross services volume of $966.4M, down 4% year over year, active clients at 763k, down 4%, while GSV per active client rose 5% to $5,230 and AI-related GSV grew 22% year over year. Fewer clients, spending more each, with the AI slice growing through the decline. Upwork also cut its full-year guidance, citing accelerating AI automation.

Shrinking aggregate, expanding AI core. Their books and our feed agree.

Method

  • Corpus: 3,515,581 public Upwork job posts captured in real time by UpHunt's scraper, the same pipeline that powers our live jobs data, covering January 2025 through August 2026.
  • Counts: raw monthly counts. Scraper coverage varies slightly day to day, and 14 days across the twenty-month window ran below normal coverage. We report raw numbers anyway rather than imputing, so the true totals are, if anything, marginally higher and the declines marginally smaller.
  • AI classification: keyword matching on job title plus description. "AI broad" is our umbrella matcher; individual tool keywords (Claude, ChatGPT, MCP, and so on) are matched independently.
  • Half-year comparisons: January to June 2025 versus January to June 2026, so both halves cover identical calendar months.
  • External figures: Upwork's Q2 2026 numbers come from the company's own investor release and are reported as published.

What This Means for Freelancers, and Where UpHunt Fits

The market did not vanish, it repriced and resorted. One post in five now asks for AI, the categories that ignore that are the ones bleeding, and the jobs that survive skew bigger and more selective. In a feed like that, speed and fit decide who gets hired, and waiting untill the dust settles is the one strategy the data does not support.

That is the problem UpHunt exists for: a real-time feed of every new Upwork job, AI-scored against your profile with a plain-language reason for every score, instant alerts the moment a matching job lands, and ToS-safe managed auto-apply for agencies that want proposals out the door in minutes.
