Upwork Hourly Jobs Are Tilting Further Part-Time in 2026 (Data)

If you bid on hourly Upwork contracts, you have probably noticed fewer of them read like a full-time commitment. The data backs that up, though the shift is smaller and slower than the anecdotes suggest. We compared how Upwork's own "engagement type" label, full-time, part-time, as-needed, or not sure, broke down across every typed hourly job UpHunt scraped in the first half of 2025 versus the first half of 2026: 724,280 jobs in H1 2025, 581,402 in H1 2026.

Bar chart showing part-time hourly jobs up 1.53 points, full-time down 1.08 points, as-needed down 0.73 points, and not-sure up 0.28 points, H1 2025 to H1 2026

The shift, in points

  • Part-time: 68.24% to 69.77%, up 1.53 percentage points. Already the dominant category two years running, and it just got a little more dominant.
  • Full-time: 24.18% to 23.10%, down 1.08 points. The clearest loser of the four categories.
  • As-needed: 3.58% to 2.85%, down 0.73 points, the steepest relative decline of the group even though it started smallest.
  • Not sure: 4.00% to 4.28%, up 0.28 points, essentially flat.

None of these moves are dramatic on their own. What they add up to is a market that is quietly, consistently choosing part-time and flexible engagements over full-time hourly commitments, and has been for at least a year. Full-time hourly work did not collapse, it eroded, which is a less dramatic but more durable kind of story.

Why this matters more than the headline number

A one-point shift sounds small until you translate it into what it means for how clients are actually hiring. Full-time hourly Upwork roles were already the minority category, a little under a quarter of typed hourly jobs in H1 2025. Losing another point of share means clients who might once have posted a full-time-equivalent role are increasingly carving it into something part-time or as-needed instead, likely a byproduct of the same budget caution and AI-assisted scope compression we have tracked in the broader market. Our long-term clients data post found a similar pattern: engagements are getting more durable in duration even as the overall market shrinks, which lines up with clients preferring smaller, flexible time commitments over big full-time hires they might regret.

For freelancers, this has a direct tactical implication. If youve been filtering your search toward full-time roles specifically, you are fishing in the smallest and still-shrinking pool of the four categories. Part-time roles are not a consolation prize, they are now, more than ever, where the volume actually is.

What this does not tell you

This data describes engagement-type labels only, not pay, hours, or job quality. A part-time role paying a strong hourly rate for 15 hours a week can beat a full-time role at a mediocre rate, and vice versa. Median hourly budgets across the broader market held roughly flat over the same period, so this looks like a story about how work is being structured, not about what it pays. If rate is your main concern, our breakdown of highest-paying Upwork niches is the better read.

The takeaway

Upwork's hourly market is not becoming a full-time-job platform, and if anything it is moving a step further from that in 2026. Part-time and flexible engagement types now make up close to 7 in 10 typed hourly postings, and that share is still growing, slowly. If your search filters or your expectations assume full-time hourly is where most of the volume lives, this data says otherwise, and adjusting toward part-time-friendly positioning is likely to put more real opportunities in front of you.

UpHunt's AI scoring does not filter by engagement type alone, every job gets a 1-10 score with a plain-language reason so a strong part-time fit is not buried under a search built around full-time assumptions.
